Terry Sanford, born James Terry Sanford, August 20, 1917, in Laurinburg, N. C. He was the second son of Cecil L. and Elizabeth Martin Sanford. He received the A.B. degree in 1939 and the J.D. degree in 1946 from the University of North Carolina. He served as an FBI agent, 1941-1942, with the United States Army in Europe during World War II, and as assistant director of the Institute of Government, UNC-Chapel Hill, 1946-1948. Albert Coates, founder and long-time director of the Institute of Government at the University of North Carolina, was born in Johnston County, N.C., in 1896 and died in 1989. He earned a bachelor's degree from the University of North Carolina in 1918 and an LLB from Harvard University in 1923. Upon graduation, Coates joined the faculty of the University of North Carolina School of Law and taught there until 1969. In 1931, Coates founded the Institute of Government at the University ...
